Sweet + Spicy: Strawberry Salsa Mahi Mahi

HeidiPowell_SalsaMahiMahiTopPic

White fish is one of the leanest and healthiest protein sources out there, but sad to say, I’m just not always in the mood for it!! It has to be cooked just right, maybe with a little something on top ;). Strawberry salsa, you say? Yes please! Paired together with mahi mahi…I think I’ve found a match made in healthy heaven! The strawberries make it just sweet enough, while the jalapeño and red onion add a little kick. Sweet + spicy = my favorite flavor combo! And believe it or not, it’s pretty dang easy to prepare. Rule of thumb: if I can do it, ANYONE can do it! Indulge in this perfectly sweet + spicy combo, and sub this meal for one of your old standbys this week. I assure you, you won’t be disappointed…and you’ll get a good dose of omega 3 fatty acids that we need!

What you’ll need:

12 oz mahi mahi, cut into 3 portions
2 large strawberries, diced small
1/2 avocado, diced small
2 tbsp cilantro, chopped
1 tsp red onion, finely chopped
1-2 tsp jalapeño, finely chopped (use according to personal preference)

What you’ll do:

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F, and coat a baking dish with nonstick spray. Place the fish in the dish and bake for 25 minutes, if frozen, or 12 minutes, if thawed. The fish should easily flake with a fork when cooked through.

In a bowl, combine the strawberries, avocado, cilantro, red onion, and jalapeño. Squeeze lime juice over the salsa and mix.

Top the fish with salsa and serve with lime wedges.

  1. Sweet Spicy Strawberry Salsa Mahi Mahi, I am confused I thought strawberries were considered a carb and you state no fat on a high carb day (avocado)?

Also, I am just ending week one on classic and with 100 cal food suggestions I am only averaging 900 – 1000 calories. I was very confused at first then got it High Carb breakfast (no fat) every day and either 4 low carb meals w fat or 4 high carb meals w/o fat.

However, I was so tired I could not have exercised if I wanted to. Had a gastric bypass 11 years ago and 85 lbs have regained 48 lbs (which is consistent with studies regain 50% of weight though still a success per my MD). I am 58 years and not fond of exercising, which is critical to success and I take required vitamins, so attribute this to my intake as a nurse.

Should I consume more off the 100 cal list, I’ve lost 4.5 lbs but today is cheat day.

I do not exercise other than occasional walking. I will need help if I am to begin moving. Should I bump up my 100 cal selections ? Please Help.

    1. Hi Deb: This recipe would be a great option for a reward day/meal since it has both carbs and fat in it. As for your daily calorie recommendations, try to follow the portion guidelines in the book (the graphic is in this post: https://heidipowell.net/4514/carb-confusion/). Those calories listed in the foods list are for general reference only, and keep in mind that they are not always true-to-portion size (as outlined on the chart). And it can take your body a bit of time to adjust to a new way of doing things, so please be patient – it should get better! Some people do feel a bit sluggish at the beginning of carb cycling. And congrats on those 4.5 pounds gone – that’s awesome!

  2. Dear Heidi,

I have been battling with depression since I found out my husband cheated on me two months ago. I am a housewife and I feel like it was my fault. I am going to be okay but I don’t want to waste this year and actually do something for me and that is to lose weight and get fit. I want this year to be a positive one instead of a bad one. I want to run a marathon by end of this year. The trouble is, my house area is not actually safe for me to go for a run and don’t drive and I can’t afford a treadmill. I also have a toddler that won’t let me out of sight. do you have any advice on for me? Watching you has helped me so much these couple of months and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I was actually thinking of ending my life but you actually made me feel stronger.

    1. Oh no! We are so very sorry to hear about all you’ve been going through, and we can’t imagine how difficult this has been for you. What an awesome goal! To train for a marathon, you need to be able to do some pretty long runs. Is there a school with a track nearby where you could run? Do you have friends and/or family who your little one would feel comfortable staying with while you train? Do you have family/friends who could give you rides to your training runs? Sometimes you can find gently used treadmills that are quite a bit less expensive than new, and sometimes people are even giving theirs away. That might be an option for you too. And please talk to someone close to you, who you trust, about how you’re feeling – we want you to be there for your toddler, and we know you are strong just by what you’re dealing with. You can do this!

    2. Aida please friend request me OllieLoveCarolynMabe on Facebook & we can support each other on life style change . I bought Chris’ book Chose More To Lose More For Life & have lost 26 lbs. in 2 months. Thanks, Carolyn Mabe 🙂

    3. Thank you so much for your kind reply. You have no idea what it means to me. I do actually have a school nearby but the kids there are known to be notorious for stabbing and mugging. My husband is the one who controls the money so that is the reason why i can’t actually buy a treadmill. I am going to try to look for anyone who is going to give away their treadmill. That is a marvellous idea! At least he won’t ask too much question about it. In the meantime, is there anything i can do at home so that i won’t have too much problem when i get the treadmill? I have started to do strenght training since I have the cds from before we were married.

Thank you again. I feel like i can smile again.

Please keep up the good work. It is great to see there are women out there like yourselves. I want to be like you someday too.

  3. Do you put anything on the Mahi Mahi before baking it like olive oil or do you just bake it in the pan with nonstick spray? I have a ton of it in my freezer.
