Ask Heidi Anything: How Can I Minimize Loose or Sagging Skin?

As people start losing weight they may often find themselves with loose or sagging skin. Skin surgery may not always be an available option after losing weight. Here are some of my favorite secrets and tips for giving your skin the best chance at natural retraction — minimizing loose skin when possible. And, what to do with that loose skin that isn’t retracting and has lost its elasticity.

  1. Hello Heidi,

I am hoping you might be able to give me some insight. I am reading your husband’s new book, and am of course inspired. I don’t know if my situation is unique or not, or takes a customized (I suppose we all need one!) routine. I am mentally disabled, specifically: (I do not like to share, but I think this is relevent and might even inspire others to speak up)Bipolar 1 with bouts of psychosis, PTSD, Bulemia (trying very hard to recover), and most recently Disassociate Identity Disorder (formerly multiple personality)- I keep a food log and write emotions down, but sometimes I look back a few days and don’t remember writing the horrible put downs (things like “you are disgusting and will never be free.” – obviously an alter trying to sabotage. The kicker is I am a Doctor.. used to be, my memory unfortunately is poor (I keep 4 journals and a little notebook with me at all times). I have been fit all of my life until I was placed on a medication that induced a 60lb weight gain in a relatively short amount of time. Devastated,(I went off of the med) it has been almost a year and I have yet to shed it. I am frightened a lot of the time, as I never know what is going to happen. I just don’t know how to overcome this and believe.. when I dont even know who I am. It is imperative that I return back to my normal weight as exercise will benefit me greatly mentally. Have you had experience with this type of situation? I know the mental issues you cannot comment on, don’t worry I am not expecting that. I am hoping for tips to get around roadblocks. Fitness and well-being. Perhaps a private email would be more appropriate if you do have the time to respond. Thank you for reading.

    1. You can send an email to my team at [email protected] if you’d like. I think it’s great that you’re keeping journals and can recognize the real you. One of the key points to success in weight loss is integrity. Start with small goals and work from there. Page 23 of Choose More Lose More for Life really goes into this. Set S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time bound) goals. You can start with one as simple as “Today I will drink 1/2 my body weight in ounces of water (so if you weigh 200 pounds you’ll drink 100 ounces of water).” Keep that goal no matter what. Then tomorrow work on another one. Take it one day at a time. You can do this! 🙂

  2. The best thing to help saggy skin is The Ultimate Body Wrap by It Works!Global! If you have not try one you should. They are all natural product! It help to tone, tighten and firm up the skin…I have had great results with them.

  3. I am starting Chris’ program tomorrow and planned my meals out for the week. A couple of months ago I purchased some Ideal Protein meals and did it for a couple of weeks but got sick of not eating fruits and more vegetables etc. Anyway, my question is: can I use those protein meals from IP as a protein replacement on Chris’ plan?

  4. I didn’t have 100’s of pounds to lose but I have seen people who have lost even more weight than me use those “skinny wraps” with diet and exercise and it seems their skin moves in with them better. So far mine is responding to it well also. Probably not for some of your extreme clients but maybe for those with less than 75 lbs or so to lose.

  5. I am deaf. I would love to know what was said and wants to be healthy and would love to know what exercises are best for loose skins and arms.. Thanks!

  6. So what actual tips were they? IF your under a 100lbs IF your young there is MAYBE help using creams and MAYBE your genetics, otherwise most of the general population there is no help but surgery? or squashing your “skin” in lycra to minimize chaffing, How is that “tips on loose or sagging skin?” and please, please, please no background unnecessary music, it dosent help if you have hearing problems. subtitles please!

    1. Amen to that. I have lost 35 pounds and have about 25 to 30 more but I have been working out the entire time. My loose skin is towards the upper part of my arm and this video didn’t answer any of my questions either
      Good luck on your journey.

  7. One tip I found that helped when I lost a lot of weight and was older is that the normal swimming suit was not going to work. So I got a light weight lycra body suit with a zipper. I looked pretty good, kept me warmer and protected me from the sun.
