Chris and I couldn’t be happier with the season 4 kick off of Extreme Weight Loss. The support we’ve gotten has been absolutely incredible – THANK YOU for watching and taking part in our peeps’ journeys :).
Now let’s talk about last night. I know many of you have questions and comments about Ty. My heart goes out to him, as I’m sure many of yours do. I can imagine the reality of the choices he made are hitting him hard right now. The good news is that Ty is young and his life is FAR from over. He can choose to change at any moment?and I hope he does. That boy, I’ll tell ya, has more potential than nearly anyone I’ve ever met :). His future can be as bright as the brightest star. Chris and I (and the entire EWL crew) know he CAN reach his potential when he is ready.
Chris and I have found that people need love and support to change, above all else. Please help us?be this for Ty, and try not to jump into the negative comments around his choices. Ty is a real life human being?with feelings. He is NOT just another episode.
Now let’s talk about the amazingness that Miss Charita brought last night. Um yes?she really is that wonderful. The spunk, sweetness, and inside/outside beauty Charita exudes is contagious!! I love her energy and am so grateful for the time we got to spend with her this year!!
In honor of her episode (which I KNOW helped millions of lives), this Zumba cha cha’ing queen is sharing some of her favorite tips with us!
Thanks Cha-Cha-Rita!!! We love you!

I felt bad for Ty when his close connection turned out to be a fraud. At the same time this was a good episode for our young generation that holds more to an entitlement mentality. Riches and good fortune don’t fall in your lap, they have to be worked at and fought for. It’s sad that Ty was so propped up his whole life that he felt he was entitled to a contract by merely losing weight.
Ty has so many things going against him that he doesn’t need people talking bad about his decision and how they don’t feel sorry for him. He has had a lot to deal with in his short life. His mother’s struggles with alcohol effected his life more than he realizes now, and may not realize till he is much older. His father, while trying to be supportive of his talents, has put so much pressure on him. He is trying to live up to what he thinks everyone wants of him and still trying to be a 19 year old young man. He truly believed that the “crook” was going to help him achieve all the “dreams” that would get him to the point where he thought he could be successful and “important” to people. (Thank you Chris for investigating this idiot and helping to keep one more horrible thing from happening to this kid.) I would have liked to see him offered some sort of therapy when he first said “this just makes me want to go home”. He was clearly in shock from what Chris told him, and by listening to his message that Heidi played, he needed support and someone to talk it through with. I know that this was probably done by both Chris and Heidi but not shown on the show. But in my opinion, he needed much more and with a professional therapist. I hope that he doesn’t become a statistic and is able to get himself back on track. As for Charita…. that girl rocks!!! She inspired me to start again on my own journey. This looks like it’s going to be another awesome season for the show! Glad to see Heidi on the show full time.
My heart breaks for Ty. I think he is still a confused little boy in a 19 year old body. I think he is trying to forgive his mom (I know he said he did) but that hurt is deep. So many people have let him down and when that “agent” turn out to be an idiot I could see the hurt again. Thank you, Chris for investigating him! I pray he will find it in himself to see that HE matters and HE counts! I don’t think he wasted a spot that someone else could have had…I believe everything happens for a reason and something good will come out of this. Heidi and Chris, I hope you stay in touch with Ty. I think he needs a constant in his life besides his father.
I made the decision, when I became a social worker, that if I enriched one life, to change that life for the better, I was a rich woman.. if I changed more than 1 life.. I was abundantly blessed for the rest of my life. But.. I would ONLY help those willing to help themselves. That mentality keeps one focused and from suffering burnout in any helping profession. RIGHT ON, Chris & Heidi. You did all you could do, and I know you both know that. You gave Ty not 1 but 2 chances to help him.. you sought him out to help him change his life, get healthy for the rest of his life. He decided to not seek everlasting change for that life and accept your offered gift. When he is ready, he will be ready. This transformation is a total 100% dedicated mind set, everyone. Chris & Heidi were spot on last night, on this first episode of season 4 and I earned that much more respect for them both, viewing this episode!
What a kickoff to the new season of EWL! I have absolutely no negative feelings toward Ty. He is like many of us (including me) who think they know what they want, go about it with the totally wrong intentions and then when the rubber hits the road, we panic realizing that we either were not even close, mentally, to being ready for this drastic a change/commitment and/or are really not ready, again mentally, to put forth the dedication and/or step out of our comfort zones that got us into the situation we are to make the needed change. Ty will be in my thoughts and prayers with the hope that he figure it out at some point.
As for Ms. Charita, WOW! She is proof positive that with the right mind set and determination, anything is possible. At the same time, there was no hiding how difficult it was and that there were speed bumps along the way….the show is REAL. What touched me too was to see the ‘confession’ and unconditional love her parents showed to her as she disclosed her secret of 10 years. Charita has inspired me to get back to my goal of a healthy diet and lifestyle….and to really think before I continue to make the plethora of excuses I have. I’m not saying I won’t trip and fall, but like Charita….I will succeed! Thank you Charita for sharing your story and to you Chris and Heidi for your unwavering support that you show your clients and being a great example to us all.
I loved these stories last night. Glad you aired TYs story, I think that it inspired many people by showing what happens when you give up vs. what happens when you put in the hard work! I didn’t expect to see you more on the show this year so it was great surprise. It for sure gives the show a new dynamic. Chris and you are such a great team! Hope you end up featuring some of your recipes on the show also! I would love to hear more about the diet that the participants eat on a daily basis…just curious how many calories and how they adjust that level as they lose weight. Love what you both do and you can really tell how grounded and real you both are. I can actually tell that you fully invest yourselves in the people you train and I love the energy. Watching the show motivates me to push myself harder. Thanks for being so real and such an inspiration.
Fantastic season kickoff! There is no negativity that i have for Ty. He is the example of many of us that struggle with life changes…we approach them gung ho but ultimately with the wrong intentions and when the rubber hits the road, we really are not ready mentally to make the required commitment and often uncomfortable changes. Ty will be in my thoughts amd prayers.
Ms. Charita is a phemomenal person and a prime example that with the right mindset amything is possible. That’s not to say there won’t be bumps along the way or that it won’t be hard as heck, but it is possible. It was refreshing to see her relationship with her parents continue to flourish even after her confession. Charita is blessed in so many ways. This show has inspired me to get my act together and stop with the plethora of excuses. Time to work on unleashing the new me!
I don’t feel bad for Ty at all. He made his choice and he has to deal with it. He is definitely deserving of love and support when he’s ready to put in the work to do whatever it takes. He just wasn’t ready and I can understand that. I think the frustrating thing as a viewer is the fact that he not only squandered his best opportunity for support and encouragement, but he also wasted that spot for any of the other applicants who were ready, willing, able, and even desperate for the chance to be on the show. The episode made it seem like he was just there for the money and opportunity beyond weight loss and that was disheartening. You of course know him better than we the viewers who witnessed 30 minutes of his life. I hope he finds what he needs in life and becomes what he dreams.
Charita is so awesome! I just don’t know how she did it all. I’m definitely inspired to make some changes. She is such a bright light. Thanks for sharing her story.
I think if he’d finished strong and completed the show SOMEBODY out there in the Baseball World would have probably given him a shot. As it is, he just looks like a quitter and nobody in Professional Sports is going to hire a quitter. I think the poor kid is not terrified of failure, I think he’s terrified of success.
I think the episode was an exceptional view of “real life.” When someone is that heavy, there is a reason and he obviously needs more time working things out. I wish him well.
People don’t realize how many people who lose weight gain it all back because they don’t address the reason they became overweight.
The Powells’ are either the best actors on tv or have 2 of the biggest hearts on TV.
Take care.
