Clearing Perimenopause Brain Fog: How to Recharge Your Mind

My 40+ ladies, do you ever feel like you can’t remember anything, it’s hard to find the right words—or any words!—in conversations, you misplace things, you’re easily distracted, you can’t focus, and you just feel mentally exhausted? You find yourself walking into a room and you cannot remember why? Or you go to do something, and you suddenly have no idea what you were going to do? You’re not alone.

For me, it feels like I’m going insane or that something is wrong with my brain, especially with all that we hear about dementia and Alzheimer’s. But here’s what’s really going on: This brain fog is not because you’re “getting older” or from being overly tired, and it’s definitely not from something you’re doing or not doing wrong. Your brain battery is literally running on empty, and your fluctuating perimenopausal hormones are to blame. It’s called hormonal brain fog, and some days, that brain fog feels so thick that you are not sure you can find a way to wade through it.

⏱️ TL;DR: Clearing Perimenopausal Brain Fog

If you only have 30 seconds, here is why your “brain battery” feels completely empty in your 40s and how to finally recharge it:

    • It’s Hormones, Not Age: You aren’t losing your mind. Fluctuating perimenopausal hormones naturally drain your “brain battery,” leading to forgetfulness, lack of focus, and severe mental exhaustion.
    • The Neurosteroid Drop: Your brain relies on hormones synthesized directly in the nervous system for clarity. When pregnenolone, progesterone, and testosterone levels plummet, your ability to regulate stress, memory, and sleep takes a massive hit.
    • The Peptide Power-Up: Targeted amino acid chains like Semax, MOTS-c, and NAD+ IV act as messengers to turn vital processes back on, restoring cellular energy, boosting mental clarity, and fighting chronic fatigue.
    • The Estrogen Shield: Declining estrogen directly contributes to brain fog. Maintaining or replacing estrogen levels (like through HRT) can act as a vital “cognitive shield” to protect your brain health as you age.

The Brain Fog Breakdown

How neurosteroids regulate your stress, clarity, and memory.

🧠

1. Neurosteroids

Synthesized directly in the brain, these hormones are vital for regulating stress, learning, and memory.

🌱

2. Pregnenolone

The foundational hormone that paves the way for all others, significantly enhancing cognition and memory.

🧘‍♀️

3. Progesterone

The “calming” hormone that stimulates GABA for sleep and regulates cortisol to prevent exhaustion.

🎯

4. Testosterone

Essential for mental sharpness, clarity, and providing a powerful defense against memory loss.

What Causes Empty Brain Battery + Brain Fog?

To understand what’s really going on with perimenopausal brain fog, we need to dive into the science behind neurosteroids, pregnenolone, progesterone, and testosterone.

  • Neurosteroids are steroids that are synthesized directly in the brain and nervous system. When it comes to brain fog specifically, they help to regulate your stress responses, learning, and memory.
  • Pregnenolone is a neurosteroid hormone, and it paves the way for the creation of all neurosteroids in the brain. It’s important for cognition, enhancing memory, improving learning,
  • Progesterone is a “calming” neurosteroid hormone because it stimulates GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) receptors in the brain, promoting relaxation, clear-headedness, and sleep. Progesterone also serves as a natural regulator for cortisol, so when progesterone levels are low, your cortisol levels can operate uncontrolled inside your body. And that can be mentally and physically exhausting!
  • Testosterone is also a neurosteroid hormone, and it helps with mental sharpness and clarity and provides protection against memory loss.

What’s the connection? Because your pregnenolone, progesterone, and testosterone levels naturally drop during perimenopause, your ability to relax, your clear-headedness, and your sleep all take a hit. You can also experience memory issues, cognitive lapses, and mental fatigue. You literally have an empty brain battery that’s not getting recharged, which causes that frustrating brain fog.

All of this can be so beyond terrifying, and some days you might feel like you’re in a constant—sometimes losing—battle with your body. But please know that recharging that empty brain battery is totally possible. There are ways to treat hormonal brain fog.

Peptides + Memory Restoration

Ladies, I have discovered a brain battery-charging tool that helped me return to my pre-brain fog self again, and I want the same thing for you too. What is this “magic” tool? Peptides.

So, what are peptides? Peptides are amino acid chains linked together to achieve a specific physiological purpose. After the age of 30, the body begins to “turn off” certain biological and metabolic processes (human growth hormone, anti-aging responses, muscle maintenance and recovery, healing and tissue repair, and so on) due to dietary factors and  oxidative stress. Peptides act as “messengers” that activate specific receptors to turn those vital processes back on.

The Peptide Power-Up

How targeted peptides can help clear the fog, boost cellular energy, and fight exhaustion.

💡

1. Semax

A powerful peptide that works directly to improve your overall cognition and memory. Yes, please!

2. MOTS-c

Impacts ATP metabolism (your cells’ “energy currency”) for a massive boost in mental clarity.

🔋

3. NAD+ IV

Helps decrease exhaustion and fight chronic fatigue—a true game-changer for your energy levels.

In episode 71 of my podcast, Chris Morris, PA-C (a leading expert in hormone management and peptide therapy) gave a simple explanation for peptides: Amino acids are the words in a sentence, and peptides are the whole sentence (that amino acid chain). Combined, they create a result you’re trying to achieve. Dr. Chris also shared three specific peptides can help with perimenopausal- and hormone-related brain fog: Semax, MOTS-c, and NAD+IV.

  • Semax can improve cognition and memory. Yes, please!
  • MOTS-c can impact ATP metabolism (the primary “energy currency” of your cells), which can lead to increased mental clarity. The mental clarity I’ve experienced from this peptide is no joke!
  • NAD+IV can help decrease exhaustion, and it can help with chronic illnesses too. As many of you might know, I’ve been battling fatigue and Epstein-Barr for years, and this peptide has been a game-changer for me.

All of these peptides can help restore mental cognition and clarity, and they can also help your nervous system recover from any high cortisol fatigue that might be plaguing you. As you strive to be the CEO of your own health, work with a trusted healthcare provider to understand how these peptides can help with any brain fog you’re experiencing.

HRT: A Powerful Brain Battery Charger

As we age, our estrogen levels naturally decline, which can be another contributor to brain fog. Dr. Radhika Sharma, a two-time guest on Heidi’s Lane and a really good friend of mine, shared that maintaining our estrogen levels or replacing estrogen when needed in our 40s and beyond can serve as a vital protective tool for our cognitive health and memory retention. One way to keep our estrogen levels where they need to be—to keep that brain battery continuously charged—is through Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). And according to Dr. Sharma, the sooner HRT is started, the sooner it can act as a protective “cognitive shield” for our brains and brain health.

When it comes to battling brain fog and finding ways to recharge that often empty brain battery, being the CEO of our own health is crucial. We can’t afford to listen to the “you’re just getting older” and “this is the way it’s going to be” excuses for what’s going on in our brains and in our bodies during perimenopause anymore, my friends. And we do not have to learn to live with brain fog as women did in the past. We have some incredible tools available that can help repair brain fog, so let’s use them! [Stepping off soap box now].
