January 12th. That’s the day every year, based on research from Strava, that millions and millions of people report that their New Year’s Resolutions have already reached “failure” mode. Not to mention that only 8% of those who set goals on January 1st achieve them by December 31st. Only 8%. So why do so few New Year’s Resolutions ever see the ball drop on December 31st, and the majority don’t even make it to Valentine’s Day? See if this sounds familiar:

If you’re like 55% of the population, your #1 goal for the new year is health-related, “lose weight and get in shape” being that health-related goal for millions and millions of people. If “lose weight and get in shape” is—and possibly, has been in past years—your #1 New Year’s Resolution, you come up with THE plan to nail this goal and decide you’re going to…

  1. Work out 5 days a week AND
  2. Eat a healthy diet AND
  3. Get enough sleep AND
  4. Drink enough water

And on top of that, you’re also going to handle all of your “regular” life stuff.

Two Secrets to Nailing Your Transformation Goals in 2020

If you’re like millions of other New Year’s Resolutions makers, by the end of two weeks (maybe a bit longer, if you’re lucky), you’ve thrown in the towel, and you went from doing four things to doing no things.

If this scenario sounds all too familiar, 2020 can be different. This can be THE year you’re in that 8% on December 31st. Through our combined 30 years of transforming lives, we’ve learned THE secrets to nailing any goal—especially if it’s about transformation.

Secret 1: Change ONE Behavior at a Time

To be successful, you MUST FOCUS ON CHANGING ONLY ONE BEHAVIOR at a time. This sounds counterintuitive because how can you achieve a goal by doing only ONE thing? Check out these stats:

  • When you change ONE behavior at a time, the likelihood you’ll retain that habit for a year or more is more than 80%.
  • If you try to change TWO behaviors at once, your chance of success drops to less than 35%.
  • And if you try to change THREE habits at a time, your success rate plummets to less than 5%.

In our scenario, you had FOUR behaviors you were going to change (workout routine, diet, sleep, and hydration). At the same time. You can see where this is going…more about secret #1 in a bit.

Here’s something else to think about: With thousands of effective weight loss programs out there, why isn’t everyone lean and healthy? They all tout having the solution to your weight loss, so why do 9 out of 10 people fail in the long run?

It has nothing to do with any program. We’ve just been looking in the wrong place. There is only ONE true path to achieving what you really want, and we have been blinded by so much confusion that we’ve never thought to look where the path really is and what transformation is really about.

Secret 2: Follow the Path of INTEGRITY

Integrity is the secret we have used with all of our transformations over the years, and every single person will tell you that it changed their life forever. Before we dive in deep, let’s define integrity:

Here is a cold, hard fact: While it is very likely that you do have Integrity with others, you do NOT have Integrity with yourself. If you did, “lose weight and get in shape” wouldn’t be your New Years’ Resolution…again.

We’re going to show you how secret #1 and secret #2 work together to make you a part of that 8% on December 31st.

When working with our clients, we call that one habit they choose to work on their Power Promise. This Power Promise has to be so simple that they can keep it 100% of the time. No matter what. As they keep that Power Promise every single time, they’re also building Integrity with themselves. And once they have Integrity with themselves, there’s no stopping them! So here’s the “secret” formula to joining that 8% club:

Still not convinced? Here’s an example of how a Power Promise and Integrity can work together to transform your life for good. On our show, Extreme Weight Loss, if one of our contestants made a promise to do 30 minutes on the treadmill, and one of us tried to pull her off at 29 minutes, she would throw a punch at us. She would literally fight us to complete that last minute. Why? Will one minute on a treadmill make any difference in her weight loss? Absolutely not! But she knows what is on the line, and nothing is worth jeopardizing the way she feels about herself and her newly found Integrity. She knows where the true value is—not in the exercise and not in the diet, but in honoring her promise to herself—keeping her Integrity.

Remember, to be successful and build Integrity, your Power Promise needs to be so small that it almost seems silly. It has to be small enough so that at night when you’re in bed, and you realize you haven’t kept your Power Promise, you will still get up and get it done. That’s when you’ve found your Power Promise. We’ve even had some clients make “Brush my teeth” their first Power Promise. Super simple, right?

If you’re having a hard time coming up with your first Power Promise, choose one of these. We call them our Foundation Five:

  1. I will drink ½ my body weight in ounces of water daily.
  2. I will eat breakfast within 60 minutes of waking (or as soon as my feeding window opens).
  3. I will eat a source of protein at every meal (preferably first).
  4. I will reduce my sugar to less than 50g OR sodium to less than 3000mg.
  5. I will deliberately move for 5 minutes a day.

So there you have it: The two secrets—which work so fabulously together—to help you nail your New Year’s Resolutions in 2020 and get you out of that 92% failure rate statistic and into that 8% of those who are enjoying living the life they’ve always dreamed about.
