Ask Heidi Anything: Can My Kids Carb Cycle With Me?

So many of you want to know, ?Can my kids Carb Cycle with me?”

While Carb “Cycling” between high and low carb days is not something I would recommend for growing children (as their bodies need more healthy fats and carbs than ours), you can rest assured that by keeping carb cycle-friendly foods in the house, you are setting a good example. Our Carb Cycle plan recommends real, whole, natural foods…all things that kids need! By eating these foods, eating in moderation, and eating every 3 hours, we are helping to set a healthy foundation for our families through our own example.

If you?re concerned about your child?s weight, be sure to talk to their healthcare team. They can help you devise a plan specific to them.

  1. Hi, I am a 45 years old woman, 5 feet tall and 114 pounds now. I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetes 6 months ago. Thank I like eating rice, noodles, breads, etc.. So the main part of the treatment was the low carb diet (I am not using any medicine or insulin injection). Then I successfully lost 21 pounds (I was 135 pounds 6 months ago) and got my blood sugar level back to normal within the first 3 months. I am very satisfied with the weight loss and blood sugar results, so I continued the low carb diets to keep my blood sugar level within the normal range. But now i am concerned because I noticed some not-so-good effects. One is that my period just stopped last month, and I noticed that I have been losing a lot of hair recently. So I want to do your program of carb cycling, but not sure if the high carb day meals will make my blood sugar level go out of control again. Can you please advise if the carb cycling is safe for type 2 diabetes? Thanks.

    1. Hi Feifei: Congratulations on losing 21 pounds! That’s amazing! We recommend discussing any nutrition and workout program with your healthcare team, especially when you have an existing health issue like diabetes, then follow any modifications they might recommend. I’d also discuss your concerns with your healthcare team. We wish you all the best!

  2. Hello,
My name is Jackson and I am really into trying to get a toned and good looking body. I am 13 but believe that I could do it. I work out for at least 60 minutes a day and I am not a big fan of sports unless it is gymnastics because of how hard it is. I don’t exactly have a health team right now and I am not a big fan of the suggestions that I normally get. I have tried so many different workout programs and diets and I really don’t know what to do. What do you think?

    1. I also eat very healthy with nuts, veggies, and a good amount of protein cycled into my diet every day with the occasional desert on Saturday nights

    2. Hi Jackson: The most important things you can do are move regularly throughout the day, doing things you like to do, and eat healthy foods like meats, dairy, fruits, nuts and other healthy fats, vegetables, and whole grains (like you mentioned in your other comment). I’d talk with your parents or someone you trust about how you can best do this. At your age, dieting is not a good idea since you are still growing and developing, so developing healthy habits are the best things you can do, and these healthy habits will serve you throughout your life! 🙂

  3. I am 14 and I have a normal weight but I would love to get a more defined body, so I wanted to try carb cycling. Is this safe for me?

    1. Hi Milly: Since you are a teen and are still growing and developing, we wouldn’t recommend carb cycling. However, I’d discuss any nutrition and exercise program with your healthcare team and then follow their recommendations. 🙂

  4. Hi I wanted to ask about my 4 year old, not because she needs to follow a diet regime in the slightest but just to make life easier when preparing breakfast lunch and dinner, what could I add to her meals to make sure she?s not following the carb cycling plan with my husband and I, but also so I am not having to prepare totally different meals for her (she eats anything and everything and has a good balanced diet so I don?t want to limit any food groups)
    Thank you

    1. Hi Soraya: For kids, it’s important that they have a fat, a protein, and a carb at every meal. So for your low carb meals, you can add a carb to her, for your high carb meals, you can add a fat. And make sure she’s getting lots of veggies too! Here’s a post that can help also: https://heidipowell.net/7986 🙂
