Shape Up for Summer: My Babywearing Workout

topcollage

I have a confession to make: I am soooo ready for summer. Even though we live in Arizona where the weather?s nice pretty much all year round, there?s just something about summertime…. And since the kids are out of school (Yay! No more homework!), we get to do stuff we can?t do at other times of the year and enjoy a more relaxed routine. I love it! However, when the kids are home all day, it gets even trickier to get those workouts in. Especially with a little one around. And summer = swimsuit season, which can add a wee bit of extra stress. 😉

So how can you get in a great workout, on limited time, with your baby, and shed those extra pounds STAT so you?re ready for summer sun ?n fun? Voila! My latest babywearing workout, which is perfect for older babies like Ruby. You can use the same Ergobaby Performance Carrier I raved about before, and besides that, all you need is your favorite little one. Can?t get simpler than that! If your baby is smaller than Ruby, no worries?simply modify the workout. And if you?ve got older kids around too, why not include them in your workout!

Before we get started, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Warm up before and cool down after by doing a few minutes of walking and light stretching.
  • Keep those ab muscles tight during all exercises for some awesome core and stability work.
  • If you need some help with balance or extra support, hold on to the back of a chair or bench.
  • Can?t quite get through the workout? Do what we do?we call it ?chipping.? When you can?t do any more, stop for a few seconds, shake it out, and keep going. Repeat as needed. It works!
  • Always, always, always follow your doctor?s recommendations.

Ready? Let?s go!

Complete as many rounds as safely possible in 30 minutes of the following exercises:

  • 5 park bench push-ups?CollagePushup1
  • 10 stable lunges?
    CollageLunge1
  • 15 supported squats?*can be done on a bench if desired?
    CollageSquat1
  • 1 fast-paced walk around the park?WalkingSmiling

NOTE: Safety first! If one round is all you feel it is safe to complete with your little one on your back, then finish out the remainder of the 30 minutes with a fast-paced walk around the park. Walking burns calories!! However, keep up the rounds as long as you are feeling you and baby are good and safe.

For a more advanced version, these moves can be done without support as well, as long as baby is safe:

  • Advanced lunge: Step out first to ensure stability, then bend into the lunge?

  • Advanced squat: Keep feet shoulder-width apart and weight on heels for max stability. Use your arms as a counter balance.?AdvancedSquat3

Besides helping me get in some amazing workouts, here are some other reasons I?m such a pro-babywearing workout momma:

  • Workouts can be done anywhere (inside and outside).
  • You get a natural resistance progression as baby grows.
  • You can do each workout all at once or throughout your day as you have a few free minutes.
  • Your little can help you get and stay fit.
  • Workouts are good for beginners to not-so-beginners?basically everyone.
  • You?re teaching your kiddos the importance of exercise and that working out is really fun!
  • And the best thing? Extra bonding time with your little one. 🙂

  1. I LOVE the idea of enjoying a workout while spending some time outside with my little guy. He just stared to crawl so it’s difficult to take him outside because he wants to put EVERYTHING in his mouth. Living in MN we don’t get to comfortably enjoy much time outside but this carrier would help us make the most of the beautiful days coming soon 🙂

  2. I’m 11 weeks post pardum with baby boy #3. I’m also going through a divorce. My 2nd son is autistic so we spend 30 hours a week taking him to and from ABA therapy. This carrier would help me get to a healthy weight, and I need to lose half of me :/ I’m very overweight 🙁

  3. I’d love the Ergo Performance Carrier for walks and exercising with my 9mo son. I have hit the 200lb mark and it’s a complete reality check!! I need to get moving and although we have a stroller it would just be nice to wear Brody and add the extra weight to my work out! I’m motivated but baby wearing would definitely make it easier. Oh and also we have a dog and it would make our walks easier being stroller free!! Love the Powell Pack and the encouragement you give others!!

  4. My husband Jonathan, little man Shea and I are the proud owners of Baja Body Athletic Club in Oceanside California. Our active 3 year old Shea has been in the club since the day we opened one year ago this month. I wore him every where I went for the first year and a half in my Ergo. We would take walks and do lots of fun exercises while in the carrier. As he got a little older he would love when I would do squat hops. Similar to a squat jump but I did not want him to have too much impact. So I would take it down a notch and just hop enough that he would laugh his little butt off and ohh would my booty and quads burn! Killer workout!

  5. I have been wanting one of these carriers so bad! It would make my workouts easier and more frequent because my baby loves to be held and she always wants to be where the action is. We just moved to a new state so it would work great for exploring too!

  6. I love my ergo! I have a 8 week old little girl and a 3 year little girl as well. I’ve used my carrier constantly on our Florida vacation 2 weeks ago. Instead of the elevator my little baby and I took the stairs with our ergo. We walked everywhere with the carrier. Now back at home I find myself using it all the time to better keep up with my 3 year old and still have the baby near me. As an avid runner and excercise enthusiast I love that carrying my baby helps get me in shape even more!

  7. I would love too add in baby carrying workouts into my daily routine my son is 17 months old and I’m still struggling with the guilt of working out and not spending the time with my boy this would be perfect!! Thanks for posting these awesome ideas I would love to win that ergo and get started!!! Thank you Heidi!!!!

  8. I don’t have a carrier yet, but am expecting our first baby in early July and would love a way to be able to combine baby with exercise. I think the carrier would be great for being able to get outside and have so many more options for working out that include baby! Great post! Thanks for sharing!

  9. I love the look of this carrier! ! The one I currently use has my daughter in the front… makes it tricky for lunges or other activities! ! When I workout with her I utilize the stroller!

    So far it’s 5k runs. ..
I’ve also had my daughter downstairs in our gym and she jumps in her jolly jumper while I do my weights and other circuits on the calendar for the day! Since I’ve had my daughter in October I’m down 48 lbs from the 53 I gained and have lost significant inches!!
I would so love this carrier to have for hikes… workout routines and to bring her with me if I’m training clients and she needs to come!!
I follow you on Facebook and instagram and would love you to follow my own postnatal journey @mrskooyfitness
You keep me going Mrs. Powell!! Keep going strong and rocking at life xo
